A few words about Kassiopi

Kassiopi is approximately 36 kilometres from Corfu Town on the north-east coast of the island. It is a lively summer holiday resort with a small harbour and it offers a wide choice of tavernas and bars for dining and entertainment.

Ancient Kassiopi was founded in 281 BC by residents of the Epirot town of the same name, who were brought here by King Pyrros when he captured the island. The name (Kassion Oro) derives from the Temple of Kassios Zeus, which was built in the area in a prominent position. The temple no longer exists but is thought to have occupied the current site of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Kassiopitras.

The oldest fortress on the island is found in Kassiopi. It was built by the Romans and is an indication of the strategic importance of the site. The fortress was demolished by the Venetians and the ruins which stand today belong to the castle which was later built in the same spot. A recent programme of renovation has made the fortress a safe and interesting place to explore.

There are some wonderful beaches in the vicinity of Kassiopi, where crystal-clear water laps on large marble-veined pebbles. Conditions are ideal for a variety of water sports including snorkeling and windsurfing. For a little low-key nightlife, the small, family-oriented resorts of Kassiopi and St Stephano are just moments away by car, or local taxis can be booked.

This area is popular with walkers and birdwatchers and offers a number of activities such as horse-riding and tennis too. When it comes to water sports there is a highly-regarded British-run sailing school at Avlaki, and the prevailing winds make this a fantastic location for windsurfing. If you want to explore further afield, Cyparissi House and Cottage include complimentary car rental. There are several excellent tavernas in the area, ranging from atmospheric harbourfront and beachside tavernas to those located in the fascinating and mysterious ancient village of Old Perithia, high on the mountain above Kassiopi.

As well as shops and restaurants, there are banks with cash machines, doctors and pharmacies, internet cafés and supermarkets, a school and a church (where sightseers are welcome, as long as they respect the traditions), travel agents and a police station.

Motor boats are available for hire by the day or week and boat trips leave from Kassiopi harbour each day to Corfu Town and other beaches along the coast. Excursions also run daily from the harbour to all parts of the island, and via Corfu Town to Albania.
